I have a new garden on quite an exposed site near sea. Last year I planted 20 Rowan trees as wind break, but they are not enough. Can you suggest what other trees I could put in front of these for shelter and what space I would need to allow between say silver birch and existing rowan trees?

Rowan is good shelter but a bit small. Near the sea, pine is hard to beat, especially radiata pine, if you have enough space. Or use griselinia, Olearia macrodonta or Olearia traversii.
If you want native or tradtional shelter, use ash, holly, hazel or sycamore, the latter is very good. Birch is okay but not great as it is light. These can all be planted about 1,5 or 2 metres apart each eay but not in rows and at randomized spacings.
