Soil Preparation for Veg Patch?

I am very much a new gardner and have just had my lawn mowed for the first time. I would like to try my hand at growing some vegetables. So my questions are : Are there any preparations that the soil would would need please.Also what vegetables are good for beginners to start off with pls. L

To grow vegetables you need a good spade-depth of good topsoil, with a good structure like fruit cake, in a sunny sheltered position with no weeds present. Cover the soil with old carpet to kill existig grass and then dig it over, incorporating som well-rotted garden compost, if you have it, especially if the soil is light.

Start with an area of no more that 5 metres by 5 metres, or even half that. Start with easy kinds such as radish, lettuce, carrots, peas, broad beans, French beans and onion sets.
