Soil type

We are about to build a raised herb bed and wondered what type of soil is best. For years I have tried to grow parsley and thyme in pots with not much success. I have heard grit should be used?

Pots are alright for herbs if watering is kept up, but not as good as open soil as most herbs like to root quite deeply.

They like good drainage but a raised bed should auotmatically have good drainage. If the soil is heavy and stick, dig in some coarse sand and some well-rotted organic material. And they need full sunshine.
