We had a Virginia Creeper planted 4 years ago, to climb a ‘plain’ breeze block wall. I must confess we never really trained properly in the interim. Most of it collapsed over the winter. Before it starts to grow again what is the best approach to ‘retrain’ it to climb properly.

The weight of the mass of shoots is pulling down new growth and the most simple approach would be to cut back the whole plant hard to a few main stems and allow new growth to get a good grip.
After pruning, secure the few remaining strong stems by tying with strings to some masonary nails or screws fitted in the wall. The new growth will attach much better is movement of the stems is minimal.
