verbena bonarensis

I have a verbena bonarensis for the past two yrs and dont know how i should prune it if at all? the new seasons flowers are beginning to emerge now but the old ones are there since last yr. should it be cut down after flowering or what i am afraid to go near it in case i damage it for life!

The Buenos Aires verbena is a perennial which throws up tall sems each year. These can be left for winter effect and cut down in early spring.
