weeding around between laurel hedging

sinead keays asked 13 years ago

We planted a laurel hedge about 3 years ago now. I must admit we did not weed around it until this year. I would like to know should we take al lthe grass away around and between plants. So we have about 20 metres planted, does all of this need to be grass and weed free – would this be a help to our slowly growing laurel hedge. I will say it survived the winter, though not due to our TLC.

Laurel or any other woody plant will more than double its growth rate when there is no weed competition.

Ideally, there should be no weeds or grass on a 50cm strip on each side of the hedging plants.

Some tree and shrub fertilizer can be applied now to the bare soil but otherwise the weeds get the benefit,
