What are the ideal trees for a wet site? I have an area of about 20m x 15m which holds water and has a few hidden springs. Thought about draining but not sure if area can be drained its so wet!Do Laurel grow in wet areas also?

If you have a wet spot like this, you should plant it up with alder spaced randomly about 70 trees and make a little grove. An alder woodland is unusual and very pretty. Put in five willows to give a bit of contrast.

Plant small trees, whips, in autumn. These can be bought from some garden centres and forest nurseries. Keep down weeds with a brushcutter or by spraying with Roundup for 4 or 5 years. Do not get Roundup on the trees. Alder is very fast-growing in the right conditions.

Laurel dies in wet ground.
