Along west facing side of garden, Colour all year , non poisonous not thorny, backing unto line of trees ?

There are lots of possiblities. Keep away fromt he trees as much as possible because of the drying effect of the roots.
Go to garden centre 4 times during the year and buy what you fancy. Four visits to get stuff in flower at different times.
