Huntsville Arboretum Alabama - well worth a few hours wandering around.

Dallas Arboretum, excellent gardens , huge volunteer staff and lessons, very well run. Fab spring shows.

Phipps Conservatory Pittsburgh - hopeless and stuck up, like a bloody opera house. Waste of time and money.

Mount Stewart, big let down badly maintained , little to see, but an amaxing Tetrapanax outside the courtyard. Also got about three years worth of the Garden magazine for five pounds, happy days. Very good scones and cakes.

Rowallane house, great , fantastic, wet and with some plant sales in spring worth attending. Very well maintained indeed. Food not as good as Mount Stewart.

Will provide more detail if you want it.

I an intrigued that you found Mount Stewart very poorly maintained. It is ten years since I was there and was very impressed with the gardens ,even though I did find it very "British " in atmosphere . I was in Rowallane in Autumn 2009 . I loved the walled garden section. The restaurant was homely and friendly but not catered for "euro"visitors. background
