Cut back frost damaged winter pansies? Expand / Collapse

Can I cut back petite winter pansies in hanging pots that were purchased in autumn -- they were severely damaged in the ice but there is growth coming up and a few flowers, but the bulk of the baskets has dead hanging over the sides.

My thinking is that if the dead stuff is cut off it would encourage growth closer to the roots. What do ye think? I know pansies are inexpensive, but these were a particularly beautiful mix of blues and yellows, and I just love them! Thanks very much. background

Cut away. You are right that removing the old and dead growth with encourage the plants to return. However they might not bloom as well as they did the first time. I have tried it with my pansies in my hanging baskets and although they did come back they were disappointing. Its usually best to throw them out and start again. background

Thanks very much...as soon as it stops raining and I can deal with the dead overhang, I will trim it back. background
