Hi Joanna,

Some horticultural grit is the overs from builders sand production. Good Horticultural grit is from Granite (2-5mm) and is pH 7.1- 7.5 ( Neutral) most of the lime present is water soluble so by blending it with soil or compost will dilute it and the first shower of rain will wash the heavy lime present away.
If you need it in ton sacks the landscape depot in Tallaght have it ( if you ask nicely as i did, they sold it in smaller bags through there garden centre). Larger amounts can be found with enrich.ie ( 20ton+)
Hope that helps background

That should help. At least I know what to look for in builders suppliers! I was strongly advised to not buy it from them, as it grit will destroy my plants, but if lime washes out...
Off to go for some grit!
Ps. If anyone tell you woodies have some, it's actually very big sand, not grit! background
