Hello,
Just came across the site this morning while researching 'Tips for clearing overgrown garden'. We bought our house 4 years ago with great intentions of turning our 1 acre garden in to something wonderful. Due to various set-backs we find ourselves 4 years later with a mess that just keeps getting worse.
It is so overgrown now that we have grass/weeds at least 4 ft high and even bigger in some places. We have tried in the past, hired diggers, dumpers etc, but due to our inexperience I think we made it worse.
At this time we can't afford to hire any machinery, and I am not looking for something superb, just something tidy looking, so I amn't mortified any time our closest neighbours drive by.
The land is very uneven after our attempts at shifting soil around with diggers a few years back and there would be some stones (hidden amongst the wreckage), so getting a tractor/friendly local in wouldn't work.
Is there anything we could do just ourselves? I know 50euro a week isn't much of a budget, but we really need to do something. We had roundup before, but at the height of the grass/weeds now, I don't think it would work.
Are we destined to wake up to our house covered in grass one of these days?
Thanks
TWWW
PS: Will upload photos later on, I don't have any of it at the moment.

I find myself in the very same position and would love to know of any ideas you may have. I love being out in the garden but seem to be getting nowhere too fast. Any suggestions you have found useful please post.

Get a good brushcutter and cut the weeds and grass down. Then spray the re-growth when small with Roundup in spring. This will give control and allow for cultivation and grass sowing or tree planting which is the best way to fill space.

Have you got a strimmer? Sounds like it would be really worth your while investing. Our last garden got way too much for us too, so we ended up designating a lot of it, 'The Nature Reserve' and concentrating on a small area that we knew we could manage. I don't like using Roundup, but it sounds as if you might have to resort to it as a one-off. This is a good time to plant trees, too, and nurseries are selling bareroots quite cheaply. How about planting some trees round the edges, and working on the bit nearer the house? Once you have a nice area under control you could work your way outwards. Also get hold of a book on gardening with wildlife and look at the bit on wildflower meadows - you could potentially have a gem of a garden!
