I have a Forsythia in my garden and it's in flower at the moment. The funny thing is that about half the bush is made up of rather jagged, crooked branches which are covered in flowers, and the other half is long, tall straight canes which have no flowers on them at all. What are these long canes? Are they suckers? Should they be removed? background

Hi Johnny. Forsythia flowers on older wood so the long whippy growths that you mention are the newer branches that will flower in years to come. If you want to prune it, I would prune out some of the oldest wood after flowering. background
