Problem Rabbits Expand / Collapse

I have two planted quite large half barrels each side of the front door. I went out side the front door this morning to find rabbits had burrowed into one barrel and lined the tunnel for a nest. They were in the barrel before in the winter and ate some bulbs from underneath this time they have done more damage as they have caused the central conifer tree to topple over and the heathers have dropped down in the barrel into their tunnels. they only seem to fancy one of the barrels....

Someone mentioned to me that rabbits do not like the smell of creosote is this true?

I cannot rabbit proof my garden with walls or fencing as it is just to large and open to farm land on two sides. I am beginning to feel that I will never have a garden to be proud of because of the problem. Can any one please offer some suggestions? background

Would a recipe for rabbit stew be of any help?  Just kidding.

I can understand your feelings about your garden.  I used to live where squirrels owned the world and I thought I'd never have a bulb that would stay planted in the ground.

I hope someone has a helpful solution for you.  In the meantime throw some onions in the barrel. background

Well, the rabbit had 6 babys in my barrel all of which have hopped off now 3 and a half weeks later..... Down to the ditch at the side of the field entrance, beside our garden so for the minute its clear of rabbits until they grow big enough to get back in the barrel and nibble what ever I am putting in it...

I am going to paint the barrels with creosote for the wood and hammerite for the rings to try keep the critters away...also raising the height off them off the ground....to make it difficult for the rabbits...to get in.

As for what I will do to keep them off the rest of the garden planting .....I still dont know.....

As for the stew ...I would have said yes..hahahaha..............until I actually saw how little and helpless the babys were when they were born and how cute they were just before they hopped off....I still can't fathom how they got safely down out of the barrel to get on there way....we considered building them a ramp... but though let nature take its course....its the right thing to do. background

We have the rabbits too, we are up to 4 babies, 3 teens and the parents, one of which has been with us for the last year and we seem to get new babies every so often, I agree about how cute they look when they come out for the first adventure.  It is hillarious watching them jump in the air with fright everytime a blackbird lands beside them.  They have sampled all the plants but all seem to prefer the grass thank God!  background

I HAD AWFUL PROBLEMS WITH RABBITS WHEN I LIVED IN DONEGAL (CURRENTLY IN KILKENNY). THE SOLUTION IS ----- A GOOD CAT. CATS LOVE RABBIT. SERIOUSLY , YOUR RABBIT PROBLEMS WILL BE NO MORE IF YOU GET YOURSELF A CAT OR TWO .

GOOD LUCK.

There is a product called grazer which has good feedback should be available from most garden centres. I know my local one The Secret Garden (centre) in Newmarket stocks it. www.thesecretgardener.com 029 60084 background
