Hedgehogs Expand / Collapse

My Garden is a walled in garden, and I've no hedgehogs that I can tell. I have however a very large slug population and as we've added a pond this year I will be bringing in frog spawn in the new year. What I'd love is hedgehogs!! You almost never see them around here- Kinvara Co. Galway, and if one did happen upon the area there's no way he'd get over the wall. I don't think I've any badgers either. So it should be a safe enough spot for a nice little hedge hog family. Are there any rescue centers looking to home hedgehogs or people with a few to spare? Any ideas at all? I know they hibernate so I suppose we're looking at spring now. background

I wish you every luck in attracting a hedgehog to your garden. I have a similar problem with slugs and ascertained that the best all round solution was a hedgehog. However I couldn't locate this elusive tenant for a few reasons; The most efficient way of attracting a hedgehog is to leave out liver for it to eat and make sure it can make a comfortable shelter nearby. But this will only work if they are in your area to begin with & if the neighbourhood cats don't like liver... Next solution I kept a close eye on animal rescue sites and became involved in fostering animals in need: Still no hedgehog as desired, just lots of dogs, some of whom liked to pull branches off my trees... Last solution, purchasing a hedgehog. I wanted one so badly I was willing to pay. However the only type for sale are those bred for this purpose, are imported from Britain and of course are albino's and cost nearly e100. Not to mention the heated tanks they need to live in to survive. There is some good news at the end of all this dream shattering though. It has been documented that hedgehogs have climbed fences, so perhaps your walls are not as much of an obstacle as you first thought, especially if you have ivy suckers or a trellis for their little claws to cling to. Best of luck on your endeavour. background

I too have been trying to attract hedgehogs to my garden --all for the same reasons. I read somewhere to put out dog food & milk. I never tried it as I thought the rats 7 foxes would be attracted to it.

I got some frog spawn and now waiting on the tadpoles to become frogs, hopefully they will and then they can keep the slug population down. background
