Cold but nice day for the garden

Paperwhites

Paperwhites

Today was cold but bright and sunny. Got another bit of tidying up done - all the annuals in the new Cottage garden were cleared away and the perennials cut back. All the Summer pots were emptied and any plants that could be salvaged put away in the tunnell. I cut off the leaves off my two gunneras and put them over the crowns and planted in the last couple of pots that were in waiting ( a bit late and the soil was cold ) but hopefully they will do ok. I planted grasses that I got from Rachel (Thanks again ) A black iris & a Centranthus.

This evening following some instructions received on our course I planted some spores of ferns that I had collected last Sunday - this is very experimental but interesting to see if anything comes from them I was wondering if anyone has had any success growing ferns from spores.

Delighted to have these paperwhites flowering for the last few weeks in my porch such pretty flowers Sorry the picture is a bit blurry

Hellebore in Flower

Hellebore in Flower

Today was a lovely day in Cavan - I was out and about early and got a great day's work done - it was all about cutting away, weeding, moving and potting a few precious bits given to us at huntingbrook yesterday.

I tried today to view the garden from the point of view of adding more light, moving ones I like but were in the wrong place and getting rid of plants that I am not happy with  (I find this very hard to do so not much ended up on the compost heap !! anything I did dig up will be potted up for the get together but more of that nearer the time.

I was a bit disappointed to see a lot of my Hellebores in flower or about to flower - I like the Seasons to be the way they are meant to be and I Look forward to waiting in anticipation for the first Hellebores in the New year Has anybody else experienced this.

The children had a great day outside and a big thanks to Gerry for feeding us all

Another great day at the "Plantsperson Course"

Meconopsis nepaulensis

Meconopsis nepaulensis

We had our last day of the gardening course for this year - We spent the full day at Huntingbrook and it was great - All morning was spent out doors- Jimi has cleared away a lot of plants to open up the whole garden to the beautiful surrounding landscape. The result leaves a lot of light and some breathtaking views. A lot of the focus today was giving your plants light and space - and if you feel that some plant is not right in your garden then you should get rid of it!!

In the afternoon we took a walk through Jimmy's back garden!! For any of you who had not been to Huntingbrook this is a woodland with carpets of sorrell and oxalis, ferns and foxgloves and a river flowing through it ".The light coming through the trees today was beautiful.

When we got back to the gardens we learned about sowing some seeds (Ferns and Cardiocrinum -lots and lots of patience required for the latter 7 years before they flower) We then had a slide show of some beautiful perennials from the point of combining colours and textures.

The day did not end there - Rachel turned up to collect her treasure and brought her friends at garden.ies a few little gems - thank you so much Rachel.

Back home in Cavan now tired but head buzzing with information ideas and plans

Ole ole ole!!

I bought this little plant for it's lovely foliage but when I came back from a few days away it was covered in little white flowers - can anybody tell me it's full name - Rachel I think you may have had it featured in one of your journals some time back but I am not sure if it is the same one.
