A good week ...

Getting ready

Getting ready

... for gardening jobs.  Got out a couple of times to tidy up, divide some grasses, plant agapanthus, plant up the shady corner with foxgloves and another hellebore and pot up some seedlings.  Lovely weather, great to be out there.  I've added some photos from this week to the January-February album (they're the last 14 to save you trawling through the earlier ones).

PS  If anyone would like the veggie seeds I got with the Irish Garden magazine today please let me know and I'll send them on to you - Cauliflower Clarify and Courgette Brice - as I'm not able to use them.

Street trees

Prunus cerasifera 'nigra'

Prunus cerasifera 'nigra'

For most of the year I detest this black cherry plum which the council planted in the grass verge outside our house.  It's a big one; in summer it looms over our front garden with dense dark unattractive foliage and  purple bird droppings from its fruits spatter the footpath and garden wall.  However it can be forgiven, for now, while we enjoy the blossom.

There are nicer trees further down our road and around our green but mostly I feel local authorities are somewhat unimaginative about street tree selection.  What does anyone else in surburban areas feel about this?

Some days ...

... you're just not in the mood for it.  I had planned to divide several grasses in the front garden this afternoon but when I got out it was chilly and I couldn't raise the enthusiasm to start.

So instead I took a few photos which I've added to the Jan-Feb 2012 album.

How to Grow a Planet

For those who, like me, missed the first programme last week, the second one is on BBC2 tonight at 9.00 pm.  This episode focuses on how early flowers helped to transform Earth ... sounds interesting.

Drizmal Day

First purple crocuses

First purple crocuses

Fog and drizzle in this part of Dublin nearly all day today.  The crocuses say "We're staying shut".

Oh well, at least I got the bird feeders cleaned out and refilled, then retreated back indoors.

Altamont Visit

Altamont, 3rd Feb 2012

Altamont, 3rd Feb 2012

My first visit to Altamont today (and definitely not the last).  It was lovely to meet Fran, Clara, Rachel, Ladygardener, Headgardner, Gracedieulass (Paddy & Mary), Joybells, NoelleP and our hopefully newcomer John.

It was a cold but bright day and the gardens were looking beautiful in the winter sunlight.  Good craic over lunch at the Forge afterwards too. Thanks everyone for your company.

Got the camera out today and took a few more photos in the garden. They're posted in January-February 2012 album.

Modest offer for Altamont

Foxgloves & stipa tenuissima

Foxgloves & stipa tenuissima

Nothing exciting ... but I'll bring some foxgloves (pot luck, from mixed seed) and stipa tenuissima (4) to Altamont tomorrow in case anyone going would like them, either for your own garden to pass on.

Really looking forward to the day and meeting up.
