Helleborus niger and chaenomeles petals

Haven't been able to go through all my 2012 photos yet; so far I like this one of helleborus niger, as it shows the flowers in various stages.  Fallen petals from the chaenomeles planted above it provide a red carpet for contrast.  Though it looks "christmassy", the photo was taken in March.

I haven't been gardening much lately, except to sweep up leaves and tidy round a bit.  The weather was nice until today so it was good to get out when I could.  Was surprised to see mahonia 'Charity' had put out lots of flowers when I wasn't looking!  This shrub was heavily shaded for years by big shrubs next door, which were removed last year and now it has really come on again.

To replace the cupressus 'Goldcrest' removed from the back garden (see journal Oct 29th), I've planted a fastigiate golden Irish yew.  It's only a baby yet and will be many years a-growing, so guess I have faith in the future!

All change over the wall

For about thirty years there has been a row of leylandii trees at the end of the large garden behind ours and those of our neighbours.  They were planted by the original owners and not trimmed when young.  This week the present owners had them cut down as they could no longer maintain them.

A big change, about which I have mixed feelings.  Yes there is more light and a welcome sense of space around, though in fact the trees didn't darken our garden as the sun comes the other way.  I feared for the birds who used the trees for shelter and nesting ... hopefully they will find new sites nearby.  I'm putting out more bird food to keep them happy.  And the newly revealed garden over the wall is quite pleasant to glimpse from upstairs.
