A little tidying

With just an hour free yesterday, I tidied up the shady corner at the end of the garden where there are hellebores, pulmonarias and some bulbs flowering now as the winter jasmine on the wall is finishing.

I'm hoping to get out for longer later in the week but this little bit kept me content for the time being.  Have added some photos to my Jan-Feb 2013 album.  Happy gardening everyone.

Afternoon walk - thanks Myrtle

It felt too cold to do any gardening this afternoon so, inspired by Myrtle's journal earlier this week, I wrapped up well and went for a walk in Cabinteely Park.

There were masses of crocuses flowering along one of the paths, a lovely sight even though they were in need of sunshine to open them to their best.  Other delights were a fine border of hellebores (and daffs waiting to open) close to Cabinteely House and the car park, and a Japanese style garden adjacent to the cafe where you can enjoy your tea/coffee or meal in good weather.

Many thanks Myrtle for the suggestion; I had an enjoyable hour or so before the cold sent me back to the car.

At last some gardening

For the past few weeks, whenever the weather has been fine I've been busy elsewhere, so it was great to get a couple of hours in the garden this afternoon.  All I did was tidy up one of the beds, plant a dwarf pine that I bought at Johnstown, dig out as much as I could of a persistent poppy that I've been trying to get rid of, and cut back some old perennial growth.

I took a few photos too ... but the light was fading fast.  Did the last bit of gardening by the light of the security lamp before coming in for the evening ... bliss!

Harvington Double Red

Harvington Double Red

As it's hellebore show-off time, here's the one that came home with me from Altamont on Friday.

I'm really pleased with it, as it will be my first double hellebore and my first dark one.  Hoping to plant it out later this week.

Plant ID please

Plant ID please

This plant made lovely fresh green ground cover in the gardens at Altamont yesterday.  I feel I should know it, but don't.  Can anyone help ID please?

If you look closely, you can see tiny flower buds in one area.

Also spotted at Altamont

And what kind of snowdrops are these?

And what kind of snowdrops are these?

... and what kind of snowdrops are these?

You may well ask.

We had a great day at Altamont today.  Thanks Fran for driving, Clare for the laughs en route, and Hazel, Brian (Jemo) & Maria, Paul (PaulyG) and his lovely little daughter for the company and chat as we sauntered round the garden.  I'll put up an album later.
