Bloom-ing in the sunshine

Clare (Clara) treated me to a lovely day out at Bloom yesterday.  We were a while getting there, as the sunshine brought out the crowds, and we felt so sorry for all the people queuing for the shuttle bus from Heuston Station.

It was lovely to meander round the show gardens in glorious weather.  We met Fran briefly, then Jurgita, Violeta and Liga and we all minded each other's purchases while a few more trips were made to the plant creche or into the marquee for "just a last look round" :-)  Sorry to have missed the other .iers who were there and hope to see you at another event soon.

Clare charmed our way into the delightful garden designed by Erika (erikalovesiris on this site) for Cystic Fibrosis.  It was lovely to meet her and learn at first hand some of the challenges of creating a garden for Bloom.

For the perfect end to the day, Jurgita and I savoured a cuppa back at home with Clare and Greg and a chance to see her beautiful garden again, which is bursting with gorgeous plants so artfully displayed.   Home tired but very happy; thanks Clare for a great day in wonderful company.  I'll post a Bloom album over the weekend.

Bergenia 'Overture'

Bergenia 'Overture'

Bergenia 'Overture'

I bought this bergenia last year, when it produced just a few low flowers as it was a young plant.  This spring I was surprised when the flowers grew quite tall on red stems, almost like rhubarb.  At first I was a little disappointed, as I was expecting the more usual chunky bergenia flowers low down nearer the leaves.  But when I see it against the golden foliage of spirea 'Goldflame' and carea elata aurea, which are nearby, I think it looks well.  You can also see a much better specimen in Gracedieu's May album.  It has lovely burgundy foliage in winter, which is why I chose it.

Now that the flowers are going over, can anyone please advise whether I should cut them off, and if so whether just under the flowers or cut the whole stems off, or just leave them to die back naturally?

Nice gentle afternoon

After a busy couple of weeks, I had been feeling quite tired the last few days, so it was a joy to see the sun shining when I got home mid afternoon and took myself out to the garden with a mug of tea and bikkies and a cushion for the patio chair.  After a while, I started pottering as one does, not doing much just a little weeding and tidying.  Then got the camera out and took some photos which I've added to the May 2013 album.  There has been so much growth in the past couple of weeks and the garden was looking nice in the low early evening light.

Yesterday I assembled the Aldi obelisk (thanks Elizabeth for alerting us to this) and placed it in the greenhouse bed.  I'm growing Moya's ipomoea 'Star of Yelta' on it this year before deciding on more permanent planting.

I love this time of year in the garden when the new growth still looks fresh yet the plants are filling out with promise of summer flowers.  Aquilegias are probably my favourite May bloomers.

Finished off with a walk to Seapoint ... perfect end to the day.

Euphorbia ID please

Euphorbia ID please

Jurgita gave me this nice low growing euphorbia last year and it has come into flower now.  Does anyone have a name for it please?  It's about 8 inches / 20 cms high at most.

Thanks Jurgita, it looks lovely in my garden.

A long wait this year ...

... but Camellia 'Donation' is strutting its stuff now.

Lovely day today for May Day.  Hope everyone enjoyed it.
