Winter cheer

Early on when I got interested in gardening (a while ago now!), I wanted to have something in flower in the garden every month of the year.

In the dark days of December and into January, jasminum nudiflorum, the winter jasmine, does this in abundance with its cheery yellow blooms.  Mine grows happily on a north-facing wall.  Over the years I've acquired other winter flowering plants but because I've had this so long now, it's a bit special.

Happy Christmas

Garden highlights 2013

It's hard to choose highlights, as it was such a good year, but looking back I suppose one has to be seeing the new border which I started in autumn 2012 come on.  While I'll be making some changes to it in 2014, I am pleased with how it looks after just a year and it has inspired me to think of other garden projects.

Next has to be the wonderful summer and autumn we were blessed with.  I've never seen the garden looking so well and it was pure joy to be out there.

But way out front and best of all were the visits I shared with garden.ie friends:  Altamont, Fran's, Hoeys', Clara's, Bloom, Terra Nova, Myrtle's, Powerscourt, Carmel Duignan's, Bay Garden & Tombrick, Mount Usher.

Thank you one and all for your great company through the year.  Happy Christmas and wishing everyone a great gardening year in 2014.

It's Hoeys birthday this week ... Happy Birthday Jurgita! ... and with the Christmas season also upon us, Clare (Clara) and Greg hosted a lovely get-together last evening, with Fran and Maria, Jurgita and myself as their lucky guests.

Clare's artistic talents shine out in her home, from the cheerful Christmas decorations to her beautiful paintings on the walls.  It was an evening of delicious food, great chat and laughs ... and even some gardening talk.  The birthday lady looked fantastic and was in top form too.

Great to see everyone and thanks again Clare and Greg for a lovely evening.

Hesperantha - Schizostylis

Even though we've had lovely weather, I haven't been doing much in the garden lately; a little sweeping and tidying, divided a few perennials and potted up some seedlings and cuttings with Johnstown in mind.

Plants that flower in December are such a treat and this schizostylis caught my eye today; the plant has been renamed hesperantha, though I guess many of us will still know it as kaffir lily.  This one came originally from a very stylish garden (thanks Fran).

Hope you are all getting a little time in the garden in between the Christmas preparations.
