Halloween greetings to all garden.ie friends, have fun whatever your plans for the evening.

The photo is of the harvest display at the Botanic Gardens.

Penstemon 'Evelyn'

Penstemons are among my favourite perennials and I have a few different ones in the garden here.  I bought this one as a small starter plant in Johnstown in January, having previously failed to grow it from cuttings.  It was slow to get going but has really come into its own over the last month or so.

The flowers are smaller than other more familiar penstemons and the foliage is fine and delicate.  I really like it.

So late, so welcome

Despite all the TLC it got, I thought this canna was never going to flower this year.  Just hope it opens fully before it runs out of time.

And the sweetpeas ... they didn't get going until nearly September and have only been flowering in profusion this last couple of weeks; more buds are showing too.

Meanwhile in the front garden, Mahonia 'Charity' is starting to flower a month earlier than usual.  It has been a strange gardening year!

Acer identity crisis?

This autumn, Acer 'Orange Dream' seems to have forgotten its name!

Comparing the photos from yesterday and the same weekend last year, it has clearly lost its orange and decided to echo the foliage of the hydrangea in front of it.

Some of you have this plant ... has yours ever done this?  It's still lovely of course but I hope the orange glow comes back next year.

Of course there's nothing to beat the glorious colour of deciduous trees in autumn, though in a small garden the foliage of perennials can look well too.  I love this time of year!

The leaves of the little Dicentra in the third photo are holding their freshness well into October.

Overheard at Myrtle's last week:

Clare  ...but you told everyone you were slimming down the garden.

Fran:  Shh, close the boot quick, they'll never notice.
