Dianthus 'Sooty'

Dianthus 'Sooty'

Dianthus 'Sooty'

A couple of years ago Fran gave me a piece of his lovely Dianthus barbatus 'Sooty' and I was thrilled with its rich chocolate red flowers and dark stems.  When it failed to flower last year, I thought maybe it really was a biennial rather than perennial but the leaves looked nice and healthy, so I left it and this year to my delight it has flowered again.

It's described as a short lived perennial, so I bought seeds of it which I will sow soon, as I'd like to have more of these for next year.   Thanks Fran!

A few photos from this morning

We've been having broadband problems for the past week or so (painfully slow, several crashes etc).  Still not resolved but I'll give it a go.

Before going out this morning, I did a quick dash round the garden with the camera, as rain was forecast for later, and glad I did as the rain is here.

The roses have looked great for the past month.  The first flush is going now but there will be more to come.  Rosa 'Gertrude Jekyll' and Clematis 'Star of India' are covering one end of the patio trellis.  I have a lovely (and very old) Rosa 'Iceberg' at the other end but it never comes out well in photos.

I got Lilium 'Night Flyer' last year and am pleased with its rich, glossy dark colour; hoping I can get it to bulk up.

And a wider view over part of the back border with Penstemon 'Bodnant', orange lilies (no name), anthemis, spirea and self seeded borage; summer colour is coming on nicely now.

I haven't had much time in the garden over recent weeks; hoping to get out there tomorrow despite the weather forecast!

Hello everyone, I'm back from an enjoyable week out west, sampling the Wild Atlantic Way and getting together with cousins for a long planned reunion.  Beautiful scenery and lots of laughs.

As usual, the weather was warmer in the East, so on my return the garden is looking good, with the roses in full bloom and other plants enjoying the warmth too.  I'll take some photos over the next few days, as well as catching up on your journals and activities.

Hope you are all enjoying your gardens in this lovely weather.

Summer Skies & Alliums

Not referring to the weather, which was very windy here today though no rain despite menacing looking clouds.

Geranium 'Summer Skies' is one of my favourites, even though it doesn't flower for as long as some others do.  I have it a few years and it has bulked up nicely now.  It's somewhat late to come into leaf but then, whoosh, it really shoots up and flowers quickly.

The alliums have been looking good too.
