I almost laughed aloud when I saw the trays of Primroses in Lidyl at 8pm. Think it was Fran who stated most definitely that he was not going in to but any . Neither was I until I saw them there. Loads left too. Did someone say they were going down at opening time today ?

Well Iam not sure if he was helping or trying to decide what to chew on next but we both enjoyed the fresh air.

The backyard has received its greatest ever pruning and clean up. I even discovered a forgotten shrub under an overgrown holly.

At least I can now see all areas of the raised Patio beds from my back door !! Now for some nice new plants.....

Selfie

Today was spent prepping for some serious work next week. Paths , edging, slabs , gate s and a pergoda to go in. Looking forwRd to the planting up come March too. Circular bed and some pathways dug out today. You'd be surprised how some people can't use a shovel !!!!! Anyhow I grabbed a selfie for my course book during a break. Unfortunately due to the digger costing extra some small changes have been forced upon us . Financial cutbacks .

Well it's time for the hard grafting now. The site is ready for levels and lines etc. today we set the lines in place for the raised beds area ( 7 of them ) and the opposite fruit and veg area with seating etc. we also marked and dug out the four post holes for a new pagoda . Many hands really do make light work . There's even some time for clowning around . Lawrence decided to race me when digging his 2.5 ft post hole,we took a hole between every two students. As he was slighy ahead at one point I managed to drop a large rock into his post hole when his back was turned . Hee hee sure you can't beat experience now can you. The photos may be upside down or sideways as there from my iPhone .

Just put up some photos of our "garden design site " with my previous journal entry. Should give a feel for the task in hand

On the way home last week I stopped to photograph our local mountain Slievenamon famed in song and verse. It has a strange draw on us all here.

Yesterday after spending all day out with some friends and our dogs in the countryside on what was a "perfect day" arrived home and got a phone call to change my mood immediately.

My good friend and wonderful neighbour had died suddenly while at the local senior citizens new years party. Larry often said to me " Declan when I go I hope to go fast sure Ive lived my life and its the young peoples turn now "

Well Larry you went in style, sang a song , picked a dance partner and left this world in a happy frame of mind.

God Bless you and dont worry about the Cats and Birds.

Today we got to see our "blank canvas" on which the three plans will be put into effect. I spent three hours clearing a seven foot wall of its Ivy growth and general site clearance. All good horticultural training I suppose. Still the day was nice and we are getting to know one another. The characters are emerging. No one under 35 years of age on course ?? Think Iam the Daddy actually but hey Iam young at heart.

Waiting on a heavy plant operator now to level site and get stuck in.  Some photos attached to give an idea. Oh ya two large Polytunnels on site too, empty and neglected but I feel that my Tomatoes may have found a new residence!!!!. As Dad used to say " when one door closes another will open" !!!

Some photos attached to give an idea of scale. (1cm/1m) according to plans ..lol

There appears to be a photo uploading error again? Or is it just me?

Hypericum Attack

Two large Hypericums got shaved today . First serious cut in over five years. God only knows how old these two are as they were well established here in 1991. Show after show of yellow masses every year despite no feeding or TLC ever! I think it's time to repay them in 2015. Hope it doesn't kill them though. The Sparrows didn't take too kindly to my pruning though.

Just wanted to wish everyone attending Johnstown tomorrow a lovely day. You all seem so excited iam beginning to wonder shot iam missing !!! Bring back lots of stories don't you ? Today I spent repotting my plants from the " Gone with the Wind " plastic grow house. I was awake most of last night listening to the wind and fearing the worst. Still I now have lots of spare tubular shelving for other uses!! Dick , iam afraid it's plan "B" for the Toms now and a new outdoor house required. Jackie you were so lucky to get the Glasshouse secured in time and the wind was a good test for it. I may be joining you in the Glasshouse2015 yet. Next Thursday and Friday are the start dates for the Horticulture course so I will no doubt be blogging you all with trivia. Forgive me in advance . Enjoy tomorrow. Declan , in windy Tipperary

Baby Cordaline found

Baby Cordaline found

On pruning back my Chrystamums today I discovered a young Cordaline growing under one of them . Never realised Cordalines can self seed but I certainly didn't plant one here! Decision time now as it's in the middle of a flower bed . ??? It could make a nice feature here and space is not a problem . Too dark now for a photo

Always nice when you unveil the cuttings to find new growth. These four I stuck into a pot last October and placed on a window sill. Looks like four more for the rose bed though iam not sure if they come true to type with this method. Dick may know . Just noticed the photo is now upside down .... Redoing !!!' Argh. I give up on this photo, posted one right way up and one upside down but no change ...

While in Waterford yesterday ( for fishing tackle) dropped into a charity shop close by. Any three books for a fiver so these two and one other (Sports ) were purchased. A quick browse inside the bedding plant expert lists many of the common and not so common ones alphabetically. The other is very useful too with many tips and advice . Great value . PS . Discovered that when taking photos with iPhone for uploading to hold phone in landscape orientation otherwise photos appear rotated sideways .....
