Planting bulbs??

30 September 2009 22:10:22
Cape primrose

Cape primrose

Decided to plant up free bulbs which had arrived while I was away. Got up on chair in sun room to look for bulb planter which wasn't there. While I was up there I started tidying and watering Cape Primroses that live on top of the cupboard; next thing a leaf broke off so I had to make cuttings of it; then I did cuttings of a white one a friend had given me. Then I spotted tiny cuttings of a white busy lizzzie that had rooted in water for me so I potted them up too.(I love white flowers) . Also did a couple of bits I had come by here and there. By the time I found the bulb planter in the shed it was time to go! Story of my life. At least I know where it is now.

Course started

29 September 2009 21:29:57
First session of horticultural course last night. The lecturer is very enthusiastic which is great but he did keep telling us that it was a hard course, lots of science , must know proper botanical names etc. The group is nice and mixed-- I was a bit afraid they would all be young and doing it for professional purposes but some others are just interested like myself. Tea break is great for finding out these things. Also it's only 2 hours per night not 3 as I expected so that is another plus. 3 hours next year if we get that far!

West Cork cycle

27 September 2009 21:01:16
Went for a cycle with some friends today round the Sheep's Head peninsula in West Cork. Absolutely beautiful; the sun came out about 1.30 and the scenery after that was stunning. Only problem was I skidded on loose gravel and came off. Scraped my elbow even tho I had a shirt and a jacket on and wrenched my shoulder a bit. Still, I was able to finish the cycle and really enjoyed it.  Any strenuous work in the garden will just have to wait!

Home again

26 September 2009 20:38:35

Home from lovely walking holiday in Somerset. Great weather. Also visited Bath and Wells--Both well worth a visit. Garden not as bad as it might have been. Cut grass and did some dead-heading. Amaryllis has flowered while I was away.

Another saga! Got the note yesterday  to say a packet had arrived so went to Ballinlough as usual to collect it to find the place had closed down. Looked at the form again--Togher--in an industrial estate. There are at least six of those in Togher. Went to one--wrong of course. Got directions and found the right place and got the packet--some bulbs I had ordered. Set off for home to discover I was going the wrong way on the Ring Road. Anyway made it home and later planted most of the bulbs. 3 erythroniums because I had one that seemed very lonely and some crocus sativa; seems odd to plant them now as they flower round now. Anyway time will tell. Off tomorrow for a walking holiday in Somerset. Bye for a while.

Shrub move

14 September 2009 19:16:16
Decided to move a shrubby clematis that was taking over a fairly narrow bed. As usual it was more work than I thought. First remove hardy geranium from where I  wanted to put it. Then dig it up. It had other ideas; ended up cutting some roots. Get some compost to nourish it, hopefully. Plant it in new hole--had to work round root of small tree nearby. Then decided to put geranium in rough part of garden where I had been digging out nettles, ivy and brambles a while ago. Of course I had to dig out lots of roots I had missed. Put in geranium. Then more compost to fill hole where clematis was origanally. Exhausted. Must resist these ideas in future.

Lazy day

10 September 2009 20:40:56
Didn't do much in garden today. Took out the bike and went to Oysterhaven and had a quick swim--very quick , it was cold enough. Enrolled for RHS certificate course in Horticulture in one of the local schools; one evening a week for 2 years. Hope I haven't bitten off more than I can chew! Wont have much time for chatting on computer once it starts at end of month.

Lovely day

Red insect

Lovely day at last. Did more cutting and shredding and planted out a penstemon I grew from seed in the spring. Spotted this guy the other day-anyone know if it's a goodie or a baddie?

No gardening today too busy. I have a literacy student in the morning and do an art class- watercolours- in the afternoon. We do paint flowers quite often so it links up with the garden. Anyway it was wet!

rescued dicentra

rescued dicentra

Planted out two dicentra that I "rescued" from a reduced rack in Woodie's last week. I hope they do as well as the one I rescued a few years ago. Of course I had to dig out, cut back and tie  back several other things to make some space first! I got so involved I nearly forgot to put out the washing! Lots of weeding too; I seem to have buttercups everywhere.

Getting started

05 September 2009 19:23:32
I've been a member a while but am only starting a journal now. My gardening skills are better than my computer skills I think.I've just uploaded 4 photos and am exhausted! Mind you I tried to upload some several times and failed so I suppose that is progress. Gardening recently has been mainly cutting stuff back and shredding it for the compost as everything is growing madly with all the rain.
