Very wet here today so just organising indoor plants on capillary matting etc as I'm heading to Spain tomorrow for a week. I don't think the weather is great there either but it should be milder at least.

Garden work and purchases
Got a few bits done in the garden this morning, mostly trying to keep things from taking over too much space, like montbretia and St. John's Wort (Hypericum). Spotted a purple crocus and a yellow polyanthus in flower that hadn't been out the last time I looked. Then this afternoon I went to Aldi and bought the capillary matting but resisted the cold frame and nest boxes, mainly due to the thought of having to screw them together I think. Called to Woodie's for a look at their reductions and got a Heuchera and a Coreopsis for 99c each.

Not much done
Didn't get much done the last while as I was under the weather with cellulitis. Luckily it is almost gone now. Yesterday I did get out and do a bit of weeding etc and discovered three hyacinths in bud in one container , so that inspired me to clear the moss, weeds and violets off that one. Violets would take over my garden if I let them and they are really tenacious once they get a grip.

now one of them has a flower-bud.

stakes for sweet peas
My sweet pea seedlings were getting big so I needed to give them something to climb so I cut a few pieces of Kerria...

Are we allowed to mention other magazines? If so , Amateur Gardening has free Viola seeds this week. If not....??

Then I was in the front trying to do something with a Phygelis which is trying to take over the whole bed and I spotted a couple of Snowflakes in bloom.

Signs of Spring--Crocus
I was delighted to see a crocus starting to flower. Definitely a case of nature rather than nurture as it's in a broken-down container that is in by the fence for a couple of years and I keep forgetting to do anything with it.

A few jobs done
Lovely day here. I planted out the Potentilla I bought the other day. I only meant to prepare a hole but disturbed some bulbs and wanted to be able to put them back so I chanced it. It has been out by day since I got it so hopefully is hardened off. I had removed some dead looking wallflowers to make a space so decided to shred them and then pruned the buddleias and shredded them while I was at it. One Buddleia has bird feeders on it so it will have to wait! Shorn one at back of picture and the Potentilla (a brown stick!) at the front protected by a curved twig so I won't walk on it or pull it up! Choisya in between.

The stem of one of the buds on this Lidl bought Hippeastum has some kind of rot. It happened with one of the others too but not until the flower was out. Any ideas what may have caused it? Any danger of it spreading to healthy bulbs? Any suggestions welcome!

Did anyone else get the scope? I bought it but it is awfully complicated. I couldn't spot anything in the garden, loads of branches but I couldn't make out what was what. A friend had told me it was difficult but I had to see for myself! It'll go back tomorrow!

Presume you all know that the Irish Times property section on Thurs has an article on gardening, largely veg, and the Irish Examiner property section on Sat has one mainly on shrubs , flowers etc and upcoming events. Also the Irish Times magazine has one on Sat.

When the rain cleared I went out to do a bit more clearing for a space for my Berberis and on my way back I spotted these two. I planted a good few (20 or 30-huge number for me) and visualised a yellow carpet at this time of year. Unfortunately they died out rather than multiplying , still these two are worth it!

Cutting showing growth
One of the Cape Primrose leaf cuttings that I put down back in the Autumn has put up a leaf. It's one of the pale mauve ones. The white ones in the pot behind are looking healthy but haven't sprouted yet. I also have a dark purple one but it is quite hard to propagate and it didn't develop many leaves last year so I couldn't try one. I might re-pot it this year and see if it does better. Any other ideas? Am I right that Streptocarpus is the Latin name?
