In the veg garden i set up a way to remove stones from the veg beds.I have been planning to do this job every year.Thats me, in one ear but out the other.Once sowing starts then the sifting job is pushed to one side.On Saturday last i done the long planned work to the outer tunnel veg bed.I used crates with the bottom one turned upside down not to damage the soil to much.I would empty the blue crate when app 50? full of good clay.Another crate can be added to make things higher. The centre section was a deep blue crate. The sifter was made up a small crate having a section of the bottom removed.A pice of quarter inch mesh wire with some ties attached to it.Done the job well for me.The veg bed B2 had similar done to it.

The Flu pays an unwelcome visit.

I called to the local doctor this evening to get something to control the flu.Though good weather, the in and out of tunnels and greenhouses cant defeat Mother Nature.

All was not lost. This evening i dug up the late planting of potatoes in some polypots.Just small black bags designed for the job.A total of 12 bags.

The type i grew were late first earlies (Pentland Jav) in the coldframe.Earlier brassicas (cabbage etc) were started there. Then when empty, prepared for a quick planting of potatoes.Quite happy i was with the turnout. At least the flu cant win there.

Garden gifts from America.

At the weekend, Alan, Kate ( my sister) and family returned from a holiday in America. Not before the time, and finally decided to take their holiday from work. All went well for the two weeks.I was given a pressie with some of flower and veg seeds which im very thankful for.The thought was there. What i was amazed with was a simple bird feeder to attach to a 2 litre bottle.I got a funnel from the garden shed and the birds think Chistmas came early for them. All done with a small section of steel.Simple, small, attaches perfect, and loved by them. The birds and the bee's they sing so well in flowers and trees.

To me its like the Willow Herb, only it is a lot smaller.I notice the purple flowers among some shrubs in the lower bed.Or will i just class it a weed for sure and exit it.Only problem is the flowers look well.

In the garden today.

Looking around i see plenty of unwanted weeds etc popping up in the tubs.Time to pay them a visit and get the job done. Some of the shrubs may think i have avoided them.Tomorrow, weather permitting that story will change.Indeed in the veg garden now in august especially, the slug visitors are at their worst. Some heavy showers today. But great drying with the touches of blue skies.

I find them slow to flower this year.Just a few flowers showing so far. Some in full bloom but a lot more to appear yet.Are they always like this as late flowering.Just as a matter of feeding them.Do i need any particular type of food for them.Or does the home made layer of compost do.Not to many problems so far with them.

In both tubs at the arch i notice my Junipers in trouble. Some sectons are gone brown.I dont have ithem over watered and at the same time never let them dry out.Should i give them any particular feed.Is this a minor problem with them or something serious. Will i move them to bigger tubs (which i hope not to have to do from where they are) or what is the next move.

                                                                                                                 Thanks.

The flowering watering can.

The watering can group had the top can filled with petunia colour.

I love to look up at them each day i  pass through the front enterence.

Though looking ok when put up empty into place earlier in the year, the petunias bring out Mother Natures colours in full.

Very large crowd at the local show.

Last Sunday had a had a very large crowd attend the local.I spoke to many friends in the hall with the exhibits.Plenty on the stands. The rhubarb gained me a red card in first place for 4 years in a row.My single entry of three kestrel potatoes only came in third from 15 entries in that class.I thought my rhubarb did not stand a chance but the result went my way.Now back to the garden.
