Our 2 Bins

Our 2 Bins

It was a beautiful day in Roscommon today so I decided I needed to do something about the compost heap. We have 2 purpose built compost bins. The one we filled last year was ready and needed to be emptied, I did this and got a heap of beautiful rich compost. I then started to fill it again with all this years cut back material, going into the bin and stamping on it at regular intervels.Everything was going well until I started to empty the other bin  (6 months old material )in on top of the new material. I was lifting forkfulls of half rotton vegetation over the dividing wall of the bins  for a few mins when out of the corner of my eye I noticed  movement  and also could hear a rustling noise, I was out of that bin faster  than I have moved in a long time :)and legging it across the lawn to get Graham. When we went back over to the compost area we saw the culpit, a big gray rat. Graham saw him off with the shovel and continued what I had been doing when another rat appeared in the heap. He saw him off as well and now was a bit more cautious,2 more little ones  jumped out and ran away... I am still not the better of it, what scares me most is that I was in the  next bin stamping around while they were in there...I did not think rats would go into compost bins as there is no smell, or food for them, what I did not realise was that they will eat anything.. I will never again be able to go to the compost heap and feel comfortable taking off the top to put material in.. I  have some photos of the bins ... no photos of the rats!!

Has anyone else had rats in their compost bins?

We finally finished  the patio area, I am really pleased with it. I am looking forward to next summer when we can put the garden furniture back out .. I have put up some pics of it  if anyone wants to have a peep..
