Just a little push in the right direction

Well, today I was facing another long day and I really was/am fed up feeling rotten. Tomorrow is going to probably be the longest day in a while (and thank you all for your condolences). So today I literally pushed myself out into the garden. Initially it was just going out to clean up the cat poo. But lo and behold I ended up staying outside doing stuff for at least two hours. The place doesn't seem to look any better, but I got two black bags of cut-back stuff. I need to get fit. The backs of my legs were stretched to their limits today.

I know some of you already have flower buds on your Hellebores. But I got just as much of a thrill knowing my own ones are almost in full flower. The fresh air was so therapeutic, and it was a mild enough day so that most of my time was spent with no jacket. I've also noticed daylight lasting a bit longer today, and it was brighter earlier this morning. This is just music to my soul as I HATE HATE HATE dark dreary days.

My Senecio petasites is still going strong, and I spotted a cheeky little Knautia macedonica just opening up another flower. Mad or what!

Looking forward to 2017

Looking forward to 2017

Looking forward to 2017

The garden is a mess after very minimal work done this summer. The new knee is coming on in leaps and bounds and hopefully in the next week I'll take some 'time out' cutting stuff back that I haven't already done. Not a great Christmas here as we will be laying Steve's Mam to rest on Friday after a lot of health issues over the last ten years. Such a remarkable woman, and a true soul mate. Her passing has been so devastating as she was such a feisty and loving lady. I've temporarily lost a bit of enthusiasm but after Friday I'll give myself a good dressing-down and get on with things. Not going to be easy, but each day there is that extra bit of light. And as the days lengthen once again, I will celebrate her life and her freedom from such a tough fight. I'm not sure whether I'll be up to the Get-together but at the weekend I'll go through my bits and pieces to see if I can come up with some giveaways.

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas.

Clematis

This Clematis is a real summer beauty called 'Bee's Jubilee'. It flowered much better this year than ever before. I reckon it had been going through its 'settling in' stage before taking off. Great to see summer flowers that are prepared to go the extra mile and flower in winter too (weather permitting). And this, in particular, is bringing its own little bit of 'Christmas Cheer' despite its washed out appearance now.

I got some half-price Muscari in Homebase last week (white ones, yay!) so they, and some tulips from a good friend were planted. Looking forward to Spring.

I hope everyone has a very Happy Christmas.

Still flowering

Who would have thought that I could cut such a great selection of flowers today as a Birthday treat to myself. There are Schizostylis, Hardy Gerbera, Penstemon 'Garnet', Osteospermum, Alstroemeria 'Indian Summer', R. 'Iceberg', R. 'Teasing Georgia', and R. 'Tequila Sunrise', and not forgetting my special little hardy Nicotiana which is still going 18 months after spotting it in summer of 2015. I was almost afraid to cut any of the Nicotiana today for fear that I might be putting the 'mockers' on it.

A bit of craftsmanship

Steve has been working on this cleat for the last few months. It will be bolted onto the garage wall and the hose will be wrapped around it, freeing up the walkway around the patio. He assures me that the weight won't pull the garage wall down!  :)

The hose had previously just been coiled up on the ground and was a constant trip hazard. It's adding to the nautical theme for the patio, and should weather nicely too.

We're lucky in that we are not overlooked by neighbours. It gives us an uninterrupted view of plants that are down at our back wall. Arundo donax is looking particularly attractive at the moment with a nice backdrop of the sky.

Totally Confuzzed!

The mild weather of late has our plants really confused. This Leptospermum scoparium was flowering profusely during March, April and May this year.

Out there for a short while today and couldn't believe that it's ready to spring forth yet again. Let's hope they won't be knocked back during our cold spell next week.

Hasn't this been a fabulous year for roses!!!    The one that I got from my neighbour years ago is producing more flowers now than it did in the Summer months. But my favourite two out at the moment and R. 'Teasing Georgia' and R. 'Tequila Sunrise'. Passiflora caerulea still has plenty more blooms about to open too.

Have a lovely weekend!

At this time of year the only part of my garden that gets the sun is a narrow strip about 2ft wide the length of the patio. These two plants are in planters. I think they think it's still summer. Flowering their socks off still. Long may it last. Another lovely bright day today after a cold night.
