November Snow

We had our first snow of the winter here in Waterford today, a very early date for snow here. I put up an album of photographs.

Spotted this today, the first snowdrop to open in the garden this season. It is Galanthus elwesii 'Peter Gatehouse'. Why it has opened before our normally first open, G. 'Castlegar', I don't know but will enjoy it all the same. Some sun to open it fully would now be nice.

Iris unguicularis 'Kilbroney Marble'

Iris unguicularis 'Kilbroney Marble'

This is another Iris unguicularis coming into its season at present. It is I. u. 'Kilbroney Marble' which originated in Co. Down and was introduced by the Slieve Donard Nursery.

As you see the petals have striped colouration, a feature some find attractive and others condemn as a sign of virus infection. However, we have grown the plant in the garden for many years and any virus which might be present has not spread to other Iris unguicularis plants growing nearby and the plant itself remains perfectly healthy. I expect it is a virus which is similar in effect to that which causes striping in the flowers of tulips.

This morning saw the first decent amount of flowers on our Iris unguicularis plants. Over the last ten days or so we have had a sprinkle, but today they were looking lovely. The rain did not do them any favour but it is so nice to see them even though it confirms that winter has arrived. I have put a few photos into my November album of the two which were looking good. Mary.
