The open season is coming to an end at Mount Congreve so Mary and I met Lady Anne Gardener for a walk around the gardens yesterday.

As Mary and Anne chatted and walked I strayed off for, as I thought, two hours of photography but it did not turn out that way as I met Michael White, the Garden Curator, and we went off to look at some of the trees in the woodland - interesting but not always the most photogenic. Watch out for a lovely Emmenopterys henryi (Michael is standing beside it in the photograph) and a fine specimen of Tetradium daniellii in full flower.

There was plenty of colour in the walled garden and we might get another walk before the end of the month.

Someone enquired about Mary's white garden the other day. Now, I know Mary won't go an take a set of photographs so I took some this afternoon. Obviously, there were other things in flower at other times during the summer but here is what it looked like today - a few views and some shots of the flowers open at the moment.

On Thursday, October 18th, Keith Wiley is giving a lecture at the Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, at eight o'clock. The talk is being hosted by the Irish Garden Plant Society but non members would be very welcome.

I have put up two albums of gardens, The Garden House and Wildside in Devon. Keith was curator at The Garden House for a number of years before leaving that position to start his own garden and nursery, only a few miles down the road.  Paddy and myself visited both gardens in April 2009 and I have put up two albums to give a taste of the gardens. "Wildside" was only just started at that time.

Keith was also featured last year on the BBC's "Garden Secrets" ,presented by Alan Titchmarsh, which looked back on the fashion in garden over four hundred years.

The Garden House was a fabulously beautiful garden and Wildside was on the way to becoming one so I think his talk will be very interesting. We are travelling up from Waterford to hear it.

There are only a few Thursdays left in the open season at Mount Congreve. At this time of year the walled garden is the attraction though the woodland is still wonderful for a walk.

I have put up an album from a visit at the start of this month.

I have not had time over the last few weeks to put up any journals because I have been taking full advantage of the good weather to get some gardening done. Flowers are loving this bright sunny weather and are flowering their socks off, about time after such a dull summer when nothing made any kind of a show. Our lawnmower broke down the other day so Paddy has not been able to cut grass so we were able to spend time on getting our veg plot ready for winter, putting out compost and seaweed and planting garlic and cabbage plants and getting a bed ready for the sowing of broad beans next month. French beans are now only setting and as long as the weather stays a little warm they should continue to produce. There is a Harvest Festival in Waterford this week end and the annual meeting of the GIY group is taking place with Alys Fowler and others giving talks and demonstrations. Hope it is a great success and anyone attending will have a good time. Paddy took a few photos of flowers in the garden today so I will try to put them up. Mary
