With the miserable weather in the last few days it is nice to spend some time in the glasshouse. I have a few tender bulbs now flowering and hopefully the weather will not get too cold as the only protection they have is a small oil heater and a few newspapers.

The leaves are falling at such a rate that it is impossible to keep on top of them. We bought a leave blower a few weeks ago and it has made the job of collecting them a lot easier. I have a lot of cannas to bring in but I think I may leave some out and hope that they will come through the winter.

The veg garden is still providing us with french beans and sugar snap peas and we have harvested a huge amount of apples this year. The pumpkins are lovely to eat and we have had lots of soup and some roast with carrotts which are also doing very well. Parsnips were a total disaster this year.

The garden is now in total meltdown and in need of a good clean up, so plenty of work over the next few weeks, weather permitting.

Gardener's World is on tonight on BBC 2 at 9.30 if you are staying in, but what ever you are doing enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Dahlias in Flower at Fota Island, Oct 2013

Wednesday last Paddy and myself headed off to Fota Island near Cobh on the outskirts of Cork city. The weather was beautiful after raining earlier in the morning and the sun continued to shine for the rest of the day.

It has been a number of years since we lasted visited Fota, but it was a garden that I would have visited many time in years gone by when my children were young, with a visit to the Zoo and after a visit to the gardens

The garden has many areas to enjoy from the amazing walled garden to the lake.

The dahlias were in great condition, flowering their socks off having the protection of the walls. Many other tender plants thrive in the garden which would not survive in many places in Ireland and these plants have grown to a huge size.

Great to see the garden looking beautiful and thanks to the gardeners who keep the show on the road.

Lavistown Garden October 2013

Today we visit Lavistown House just outside Kilkenny city. There are courses run in the garden during the year  from gardening design to basket making. Today was just an informal open day and the owner brought us around the many flower beds that were stuffed with late flowering plants. Have put up an album which may be of interest if you are thinking of doing any of their many courses.

The Rain Has Arrived.

The Rain Has Arrived.

The Rain Has Arrived.

It has been raining for three days now apart from a little sunshine around lunchtime today here in the Waterford. The garden has needed rain for the last few months but I could happily do without it and hate to see the dark nights coming in so quickly.

The local garden club has it's first meeting to-night which also marks the coming of the long dark wet nights. Our first meeting has Carl Wright speaking and he gardens near Fanore, in Co Clare. There should be a good attendance and hope some visitors from Wexford will make it.

The garden is looking as if a gale has blown through it but, despite that, asters and sedums are flowering their socks off. The yucca has four flower spikes on it this year despite the hammering it got during the bad winters. Leaves are everywhere and there is no keeping on top of them. We bought a leaf-blower last week but with the wet weather there is no way it would collect them.

Looking forward to the weekend when we hope to visit Lavistown House, which has an open day from 10.30 to 12.30.
