Pick of the day

Pick of the day

The garden has gone a bit down hill recently because I am a summer weather gardener. Thankfully the dahlias and little chrysanthemums look after themselves. I am still picking loads of little cherry tomatoes that are growing in pots outdoors.

I thought I was sowing medium height Cosmos but they turned out to be over a metre tall. The storms flattened them but but they are still flowering away.

I cut  this bunch for the house earlier today.

Between the downpours

Between the downpours

Between the downpours I took a quick trip into the garden this afternoon.  These anemones were  standing up well with no staking. They have been blooming beautifully for ages too.

These are looking good in the garden at the moment. Sadly the rose has a lot of black spot but you don't see that when  in a vase.

Polish Spirit

Polish Spirit

Clematis Polish Spirit is doing very well this year. It's in a trough and I can see it through the  kitchen window when I am at the sink!  I took the good advice of another contributer to this site... prune in March ,feed well and control slugs.

New planrs

3 New Plants

3 New Plants

I bought these 3 at a plant sale at Russborough House yesterday morning. Good value at 4 euro each I think.

Digitalis paviflora ... a brownish foxglove. I  bought it because that I hadn't seen before. I hope it is worth growing.

Zantedeschia aethiopica, Arum Lily. I have admired it in so many gardens but never spotted it for sale.

A dark red penstemon. When I got home I realised that it did not have a name tag attached. I will probably be looking for a plant ID on this forum next year.

Encore!

Encore!

This little orchid is flowering for me  for me a second time. When the original flowers were gone I cut back the flowering shoots to just above a bud . Both sent out flowering side shoots. A brand new shoot with buds has formed between the leaves so that will make three sprays altogether. I'm delighted!

Worth growing on?

I repotted some Dutch Iris yesterday. I was wondering if it was worth growing on the 'baby' bulbs. Does anyone know if and when they are likely to flower?

The hosta is hole free for the first time. I have to admit to giving it regular doses of little blue pellets though.

The orange and yellow creation is made from things that are lookin good in the garden at the moment.

We have just had first BBQ of the year. What a beautifully warm day it has been.

Blue seems to be the dominant colour in my garden and I love it. The Cerenthe was given to me by Geraldine at Johnstown.

Dutch Bulbs

Dutch Bulbs

I bought Hymenocallis bulbs during a weekend in Amsterdam in May and I am delighted with the result.

Seasonal?

Seasonal and not so seasonal.

Seasonal and not so seasonal.

It feels like spring at last so I'm looking forward to a bit of gardening for the weekend.

I got seeds from seedaholic.com today and will sow some of them tomorrow... cosmos ( can't have enough of these), datura ( tried before, got huge plants  but no flowers )  and zinnia ( took a fancy to them when I read the blurb on the website ). Ammi majus and calendula will go in the open ground later.

The Ponsettia in the photo was a Christmas gift and is still going strong.

I visited Rathbawn Gardens, Kilteel, for their open day in aid of injured jockeys  yesterday. Shortly into the visit I noticed the ducks waddling into the shed for shelter! Dispite the pouring rain a small group of us enjoyed a very informative tour of the beautiful garden followed by coffee and cake.

The garden is very near Jimmy Blake's so watch out for the open days if you are in the area.
