Picked this beauty this morning! it weighed in at 493 grams!

Large Tomatoes

Picked the first of the large toms today! the red one is San Pedro and weighed in at 251 grams (over half a pound!)  and the other tom is Big Rainbow which weighed in at 215 grams! these are the first fruit from the large varieties, there are much bigger fruit only starting to ripen! a lot of which are closer to the 2lb mark!

This is another one that is fruiting well for us at the moment, not as large as the Big Rainbow but a very good cropper with meaty, tasty fruit! first year to grow this variety and impressed by it so far!!

These large toms are almost ready to pick! these are the first of the "large" varieties to ripen, will look forward to picking these later in the week!!!

Maggie was so delighted with picking our first home grown Lemon she phoned our friend Pauline, who duly arrived with a bottle of gin! the lemon was sliced and put to the test (for several hours!!!) Pauline was extremely impressed, she says's she cant wait for the next one to ripen!!!

After the "devastation" with the cabbage root fly during the week today we celebrated picking our first ever home grown Lemon!

This evening we lost all our Winter cabbage and Brussels sprouts to the grubs of the Cabbage root fly! first time i have ever encountered this little f####r but we can have no complaints as we had no precaution in place! next year we will have to be more prepared!! although in over 30 years of growing veg its the first time we have encountered this nasty little fly and its offspring!! it was not a huge loss, 12 cabbage and 4 Brussels sprout plants! but annoying none the less!!!!

The last of our "Giant Lilium" opened today, this one is called "Honeymoon" and is a lovely soft yellow, this "Giant" reached the lofty height of 2ft!!!!!!

Pickled Beetroot

Beetroot Pickle

 21/4lb beetroot unpeeled of similar size

1 litre red wine vinegar

8oz granulated sugar

1small bay leaf

1 cinnamon stick

1 star anise

4 black peppercorns

1tsp sea salt

Cut tops of beetroot, wash and leave to side

 

Put all other ingredients in to a heavy based pan and heat until sugar has dissolved and then bring to boil then add beetroot bring back to boil and the simmer for1-2 hours until beetroot is tender. leave to cool in liquid.  When cool remove and peel and dice. put in to sterilized jars..Strain  liquid and bring back to boil, pour over beetroot until completely covered.  Store in cool place. Allow for 1 month for flavour to mature.

The Greenhouse is full to capacity with fruiting plants! we have 14 toms, 7 sweet peppers, 2 aubergines, 1 cucumber, 1 fig tree and 1 lemon tree! plus numerous pots of basil and salad leaves!! have to say its a melting pot of delightful fragrance's.................

Potentilla's seem to be all the rage today, this is one of a few we have grown from seed last year, passed a couple on to Jacinta and Fran, lovely vibrant colour......

This is our first cucumber of the season! its a small variety called Bambino Blanco, we have grown it for a couple of years and it is a lovely small sweet variety that crops really well over the summer, certainly one i would recommend....
