Altamont Again

Altamont Again

Altamont Again

This morning I visited Altamont Gardens in Carlow again with my daughter and some friends who are staying. It was a lovely morning for it.

Soon after arriving I remembered that I had the notes I made at last night's snowdrop talk still in my handbag so I decided to see if I could get my hands on a few of the good 'ns Paddy had mentioned.

However, disappointment was in store and only one on my list was available. It was €15 for the one snowdrop in a pot!!! I decided that being a galanthophile is just not yet on the horizon for me and that the Galanthus nivalis I already have are really quite good enough for the moment. lol.

I bought a nice eremurus instead for €12 and I think I made the right choice for my garden :D

Galanthus 'Walrus'

Galanthus 'Walrus'

I'm just back from a talk in Enniscorthy by Paddy Tobin on snowdrops.

It was completely enthralling and, although I will not recall all the different cultivar names, I got a whole lot out of it. I feel my interest has been kindled.

Now I am home I am already planning what I will divide after flowering and spread about. I noticed that my clump of G. nivalis Flore Pleno has bulked up nicely and could maybe be spread a bit further...

Many thanks, Paddy. I loved it all.

PS The photo was taken in Paddy's own garden on 10th of this month and is, if I am not mistaken, Galanthus 'Walrus'.

I have two videos for you today.

The first is a tongue in cheek look at orchid genealogy, where no expense was spared on elaborate props. But, you will be pleased to hear, no orchid was harmed in the making of this video...

The second video is on repotting streptocarpus and takes a look at the ones I currently have in flower, despite this being their off season...

I hope you will find something of interest.

Bit & Pieces

Cym Cliff Hutchins 'New Horizon'

As you may have seen from Tina's journal, she came to visit yesterday and I had a great morning.

Since then I've been doing a little potting on and taking chrysanthemum cuttings. The weather is very variable and I must confess that I have only been out to the greenhouse. It is nice out there as plants are beginning to wake up.

I got another great surprise yesterday when an unexpected orchid arrived in the post from an acquanitance, and it still in bud!

I forgot to mention that last Thursday I went up to Dublin to a talk by the Alpine Society of Ireland, where I met Liga.

We had great fun and I came back with a tray of little plants too :)

I was surprised not to run in to any of you there!

Oh look, it's Wednesday again. And that means videos.

I have two for you today. The first deals with the outdoor carnivorous pitcher plants and their spring care.

The second is a tale from two continents, which involves a dancer, a queen and a beheading.

Altamont

There was some sunshine today so I popped along to Altamont. It is the tail end of their snowdrop week.

The gardens are really looking well and the place was packed.

Of course I had to bump into someone and it was Scrubber. He was found, mulling over the plant sales and in fine form.

I think my recent trip to Waterford had influenced me because I came home with a little pot of Galanthus elwesii, whcih I'm looking forward to planting out.

Oh, and I got your bulbs, Tina!

Well, you've seen the movie, now it's time to view the photos.

I've just put up my photos from Tuesday's visit to Mary & Paddy's fabulous spring garden.

They are on Facebook as it takes too long to upload here. I hope you enjoy them...

It is time for the Wednesday YouTube videos again. As usual, there are two - one for indoor/greenhouse type activities and one for the great outdoors.

Yesterday spring led me to Paddy and Mary Tobin's beautiful Waterford garden, which I videod, so that you too can join in the pleasure of their snowdrop and hellebore collections...

Plants in the Post

I received more plants in the post yesterday. This time they were as a result of an epiphyllum competition I won at Christmas time.

Happy days!

Today I noticed this Brugmansia sanguinea flowering in the greenhouse !

Hello from a frosty Wexford and here are this week's videos.

The first was taken at the very end of January, when I planted my last tulips...

My favourite orchid, looking its best today.

Cattleya C.G. Roebling 'Sentinnel'

And, yes, this is the same orchid that I'm holding in my avatar. The avatar photo was taken last year when the orchid last flowered and, jeez, I'm wearing the same jumper :P Maybe I should get some new clothes!

New Orchids

Some new orchids arrived in the post yesterday. They are a present from an orchid contact from a site. Although they are cold ones, I was very glad they arrived before last night's harsh temperatures.

Anyway, here they are. I might make a video about them later as there'll be no gardening today! I'm noticing that my orchid videos are much more popular than any other type, which is very interesting. It would seem to be a trend. More orchid-lovers watch YouTube than other gardeners.

Anyway, these are the black, Cymbidium Cali Night 'Geyserland' and Coelygyne cristata.

Signs of Spring

While I am not of the opinion that spring starts on St Brigid's day, there are definite signs of what's to come out there.

Tidying the Greenhouse

Yesterday I spent a good long time tidying the greenhouse.

The messiest things are the pelargoniums.

I also gave water to drooping plants and others.

Very frosty and cold today!
