Month: June 2014

I had a lovely climbing rose in a half barrel at one of the posts of the Logia. But last year I felt it would perform better planted into the ground so moved it to the bed just outside the patio doors. It has lovely growth on it, but sadly it will NEVER do even HALF as well as Terra Nova’s ‘Teasing Georgia’ However, there are a few buds about to open.

R. ‘Teasing Georgia’ is YELLOW! Unopened buds don’t look terribly yellow to me!

It has been a wonderful spring and the summer flowering is exceptional. Many plants have flowered for the first time and there is profusion. Roses, eremurus, iris, lilies, sisyrinchium, alchemilla, geraniums, astilbe, cornus, and now the first dahlias bring a summer of colour. And it will continue all the way into autumn.

I just moved into a house with a decent size garden for a city house.  However the garden was in severe neglect and had weeds well over 6 foot!  I got the garden cleared and am now left with a complete blank canvas.

I love having a garden and would eat every meal in it weather permitting.  However the garden still needs a lot of work.

I hope between this year and next to get a shed, make a pathway, do some landscaping, have a patio area for dining, plenty of scented colourful flowers and a vegetable patch.  I’m big into organic living and juicing so look forward to growing produce I can then use.

My parents are master gardeners but I am merely starting so I look forward to learning a lot from this community and eventually showing off what I have accomplished.

The Irish Garden, July issue, reached the shops on Friday, having arrived through subscribers’ letterboxes on Thursday!

Finola Reid has a great article on lilies … some top-notch photos too!

There’s a feature on gravel gardens …. a great way to grow some wonderful flowers.

If you haven’t been to Warble Bank in Wicklow … check it out in The Irish Garden and put it on your list!

Lots of other interesting pieces … from Mary Keenan, Frances MacDonald, Klaus Laitenberger and Tanguy de Toulgoet on fruit and vegetables. Dick Warner on gardening for wildlife, and Lorna MacMahon and Mary Waldron open their notebooks!

Look for the stunning red Stargazer lily on the cover!

Last night these beauties opened and the perfume was fantastic. Just had to share them. Love the colour – the size – everything. They look like ballerinas.

Overheard this little remark “Gardeners dont make mistakes… they just have happy Accidents”…nice thought to start the Day with…

                     Another Scorcher here…

Hi Matt…Every Day to me is a Happy Day…I’m retired and loving every God-givin’ second of it…I’ve no distractions {apart from Miss Daisey}and my Garden is my full-time enjoyment…I dont even consider it to be work…I walk the Dog every Morning at 1st light and after a quick Breckie’ I’m out in fresh air…I’m usually on Top of everything and that makes Life easier…having good Neighbours also adds to the enjoyment…they are not in your Pocket but are there if and when you need them… Yep”’ I have plenty to be Happy about…

Did anyone see today’s Sunday Times?

I didn’t but I understand that Philip Hollwey’s meadow is featured in Jane Power’s article and there is mention of his Open Day on Sunday 6th July.

Come see both our gardens on Sunday 6th July as they are appropximately 20 minutes apart!

My GPS coordinates are … 52.67527, -6.54488

I am trying to do an album. I hit ‘add pictures’ and select the ones I want to use and then press open and normally the picture comes up but at present Im getting a blank space and something telling me to try again later. If you are so kind as to look in my Photos selection you will see what i mean. its the mediterranean album. Am I beyond help? I did  press ‘save album.

Got this geranium over a yer ago from Bruno and lazy me left it in it’s small pot up till a month or so ago when i potted it on and it just burst into life and today started flowering which i am very happy with but should have done sooner as it a great loking flower. Would love an I.D. if anyone knows it.

What a day I had yesterday.  Briliant time with Fran, Clare, Joan and Violeta from Garden.ie with their lovely other halfs Maria and Greg and Aiofe. Even the bad smell from the farm did not spoiled our garden walk…and the cheesecake was just so yummy . Thank you Aoife and Maria…

I am thinking about the Open day for our gardeners and would love to see yu all so These 4 garden inspectors came yesterday and checked every corner of  of my garden to make sure you all will have something to see and enjoy the beautiful country side..

thank you again…

Sometimes something just catches your eye and this did today in the garden.

Its Geranium ‘Dragon Heart’ intertwining itself around this orange Gerbera and the Agastache ‘Apricot Sprite’ peeping up in the background.

I think it works!!

Thought my tomato plant (Polen variety) was needing a good drink because the leaves at the tip of the plant were drooping and curling up but maybe not.  So far I have cut out more of the foliage and left the door / window open more to enhance circulation – I think I might just cut-off the stems that are affected.

The main thing I am left wondering anytime I visit Jugita’s garden is ”how she does it all and have it looking so natural?”

Jurgita answered this question for us yesterday, and I quote.

I just plant my plants, I look at them for a few moments and I say GROW, and they just grow, easy”

Now you know!

When I was planting up Angela’s corner I had learnt an awful lot from the site here and from garden visits etc.

So prior to planting I did do a good bit of googling of some of the plants and work out a few that might work well together, the rest was hit and miss.

I am coming to be really pleased with this combination, Ligulaia zepter and Clematis recta.

Last week I had a visit from a favourite cousin and his wife. They came to harvest some willow – I know, wrong time of year, but I reckon willow will grow anyway!

So while they were with me they strolled around the garden and took some photos. I always find it fascinating to see which bits of the garden appeal to others – its a real case of seeing the garden through different eyes!

I’ll put their photos in my June Album!

Noel and Jo loading willow

i got flame lilly bulb/corns amoung others at bloom the cana lillies are doing good and the plum day lillies but the flame lillies and ginger lillies are not showing any signs of coming up i planted them on june bank hoilday monday should they be showing signs of coming ?

Gardening can be a tough business.

It can result in aches and pains and splinters.

It can result also in immaculate gardens, as seen today in Waterford or last week in Limerick.

For my part, I am happy to have my daughter home to remove splinters and know that I have another week until Open Day.

Hope to see you there.

Many thanks to the members of the site who visited the garden today. It is great to think of all the lovely people that we have made friends during the time we have been on this site. Thanks to members that have sent contributations to the society, it is so much appreriated.

just to remind anyone that is interested the garden festival in claregalway is next weekend sat 5th and sunday 6th july. looking forward to this. if anyone is going and would like to meet up that would be great.

OMG, Was soooooo engrossed in pond life today. Spotted a dragonfly hatching out this morning. I sat and watched, and waited….. and watched….. and waited. Never witnessed this up-close-and-personal as much as today. Pity Wee Davey had already gone home. He would have been fascinated watching the whole process.

Posting an album. Some of you may wonder why so many photos. But there are very subtle differences in the developmental stages. So you can choose whether or not to look at the album. It’s good to have it on record though.
