Month: June 2015

Just one of my quirky areas at the moment. What a wonderful evening to be ‘chilling’ 😉

Kathrin did you get my Private message aka PM?

It is sad when the Lupins finish they provide such great colour and interest. Also the Opium poppies though I don’t love them as much . But both leave huge gaps when they are cut back especially the poppies if you have a large clump. So what do you do? Do you have plants in pots waiting to replace those that are finished or do you have some other plants in the ground nearby that will fairly quickly  spread to fill the empty space? I would favour the second alternative if I could think of what plants could survive while buried by Lupin or Poppy leaves and stalks and yet spring to life when these are removed. Cosmos are a possibility but this year I decided to grow the Double click and Polydor varieties and am so disappointed as they just will not grow taller than at best  six inches, have no idea why. I gave some seedlings to a friend who is having the same problem with them. The blurb says they will grow to three or four feet tall ….maybe by October!!

I think Jackie asked me to put up a photo of my other tyoe of Thalictrum when the flowers opened so here it is …. Hard to get a clear shot of such delicate flowers. It is already over 4 feet tall and still growing!

Took a few photos in between the showers in Roscommon today…it felt more like October than June.. We have a bit of color despite the weather 🙂

Bowl of Beauty ...love it!!

I have to agree with Monty ,it is a great year for roses. Some people think they are a  lot of work.Apart from pruning mine and giving them a feed that is all i do with them .I never spray for rust or black spot

This is my favourite rose just now !

I have uploaded my June album. I hope you all enjoy it!  I cant believe the amount of flowers that are now in flower but also what has to come yet!!! its just so exciting!

It was a gorgeous day today and I just took it easy and sat out in the garden under the gazebo for a couple of hours, just taking it all in and feeling so lucky too.

I have some seedlings I want to pot up of Winter pansies and Wallflowers but that will be done during the week, as I need to take it easy this week.

OVerall Im very pleased with how the garden is looking and what is in flower and about to flower. Its been great fun just getting it to here and I think the weather will be kind to us this week, although I wish it had rained just a little bit more last night as my garden is very VERY dry at the moment.

Hope you all are enjoying this wonderful weather too!

Hi ,

I have added a new entry on my garden blog on my site www.happinessandhazelnuts.com entitled “Serenity in the Garden”

Best wishes,

Just a reminder that the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show is on this week and BBC are broadcasting four programmes from the show, starting on Monday next at 9.30pm.

Here it is – the video I made of Helen Dillon’s visit to my garden last Friday.

Such a lovely person and a great day…

Helen Dillon Visits Douentza Garden in Wexford – YouTube

General Sikorski, just starting to open now.

Love this one.

A beautiful 3 acre garden with amazing designs and fun for all the family in West Cork.

This 3 acre garden is full of surprises with each garden style flowing into the next. The front garden contains a sunken white garden, an Italianate canal and a Japanese garden. The boundary wisteria walk opens out into the bog garden and woodland area, from where you can continue to the tea house to enjoy a view of the Mediterranean and tropical gardens. Wander over the birch mound, which is surrounded by the wildflower meadow, into the walled kitchen garden to view the seasonal vegetables.

The kids will have great fun visiting the Hobbit House built right through the birch mound or searching for the fairy houses in the Fairies woods.

View the Budgies, Parakeets, Finches, Ducks and Chickens in the Aviary.

Jackie, this is the dish that I have planted the Semperverums in.  Over the years I have planted this up with different things but happy with this new planting now!!  The ‘little man’ I picked up in a car boot sale for 1 euro a few years ago!!!  He’s been moved about the garden over the years!!

Semperverums

Well it’s different for me at least . Grown from home collected seed and it appears to be a new color in this neighborhood . Looks better than the photo shows.

I had a pre-open day visitor to Douentza today.

I guess the title of this journal gives it away.

Yes, it was the charming and not-so-fierce-as-her-reputation Helen Dillon.

I had a lovely day and got some great tips and, yes, there will be a video in time 🙂

Subscribers will have had the July issue through their letter boxes on Wednesday and the magazine is now on the shop shelves…

Painting your garden … the July issue of The Irish Garden carries a feature on creative ways to use paint in the garden. There is a profile on the charming mallow family of superb summer flowers. There is a before and after of a re-designed suburban garden and a visit to a beautifully maintained private garden in South County Dublin. As always, there 20 pages of what to do in the garden in July…. The Irish Garden on sale now!

I acutally went out and bought proper peony supports this year.

Now I’m wondering how I ever managed without!

Have this about three years and I’ve been very patient waiting for it to really ‘take off’. It’s flowering now, and has put on a bit of growth since planting it originally. Quite pretty, in an understated way But is it ever going to provide any impact? is it worth keeping?

Just starting to flower now, great strong orange colour.

Thank you Margot.

This Sweet Pea is looking great at present.  Year after year it is getting bigger.

Perennial Sweet Pea

Just opening now and I do love this Dahlia, I have it in a much better position this year to enjoy it more. Loads of Dahlias near opened now. Light rain here at them moment but perfect for the garden.

What a joy to hear this little wren singing his heart out this morning.

Tullamore Garden Group came to visit yesterday and what a wonderful bunch of people!

You may know Ruth (Ladybird) and Henry from this site!

Anyway, I think everyhting went really well and smoothly and I was delighted that some streptocarpus enthusiasts were among their number!

The photo shows the quiet before the stoem (so to speak)!
