Month: February 2018

As you can see these sweet pea seedlings were sown 10 days ago. I saw some posts about root trainers recently so I decided to try loo roll inserts. Stay safe & warm everyone.

Evening all. I did some fleece wrapping in preparation for the big freeze and snow and brought the smaller and more tender plants from the greenhouse into the house. Then took a few photos of plants looking good this afternoon, in case they look awful after the weekend! Take care everyone, stay warm and safe.

I’m just putting a test here so I could add some photos.

Have a nice day! I hope you all got your shopping before the panic started. We missed out, but we got some great carpet cleaner.  😉

With the horrid weather forecast I took some photos of flowers brightening my garden at the moment. I see Mary is having problems adding photos to her journals so I’ll see if i can add a comment to her journal explaining it. It might be helpful if the button “Add Media” said “Add Photos” etc.

Spent a while today covering up a few plants that might be prone to damage with the cold weather which is forecast over the next few days. I also brought in small pots which I have planted up with spring bulbs as they would be more susceptible to freezing. I do hope large pots I have around the garden will not break as I have had some of them for a very long time and they have aged nicely. I did put an extra layer of fleece on my Tree Fern and had notice when I removed the covering last week when I was open for a snowdrop visit that it had grown over the winter months. It would break my heart if this died.
How do I post some photos with the journal and can you upload an album?

Hey Craig……all looking good….but comments are still missing………

This seems much faster!

Comments are still missing this evening.

Mary it’s good to see you testing it out too. I don’t seem to have a problem with it remembering my log in either on my laptop or the mobile. Craig did say to Clear your cache and that will fix some things which have been updated and tjis worked for me but then the comments disappeared. I’m sure these too will be fixed.
Also I’ve only had one or two notifications for here. Again I’d say that’s another issue that’ll be sorted before it’s 100%. But it’s getting there. 😉😊

I have to put my password in every time I come to the site despite ticking the box (remember me). Should we be getting notifications on journals?

The weather is expected to change for the worst over the next few day, so let’s hope the few flowers that are flowering get through this freezing weather without to much damage. At present I have a beautiful Cornus mass flowering in the garden and have never seen it looking so good. Hellebores have been a little late this year in coming to flower, maybe due to the low light levels in Janurary and February. Snowdrops are now starting to go over for this year, but Galanthus ‘Lady Moore’ is flowering as elegantly as ever.

Delighted to see my trees growing strong despite the exposure to the Atlantic. I chose, Pines, Alders, Birch, Ash, Willows and a few Sycamore.

Tonight I’m trying to comment on Peters journal and I’ve no option to do that on my mobile?  Could go it before. Just wondering why that’s happening. I went in both on Garden club and recent activity.

Cant comment on Craig’s recent one either. Delighted to hear work is progressing too. Thanks a million to the team.

Im on the laptop this morning and again the comments boxes are gone so no way to comment!

The team are working quite hard this week and some of the problems that have come up have been resolved!

If you are not noticing this be sure to clear your browser cache.

Have you all been feeling the urgency to get stuff done while we have this lovely Spring weather? I certainly have! I recently got my pressure-washer fixed so I was testing out ways to resolve the issue of flooding at my front door that I had this winter. I haven’t cleaned the tarmac for at lest 5 years so it was pretty grotty and probably contributed to the flooding by not draining away water. Very soul-destroying work but necessary.

I did the first section on Monday took a break on Tuesday and got back at it today.

So yesterday on my Day Off I took some photos and did a bit of “real” gardening – cleared another border and even caught up on the shredding!

Hi all,

Just to clarify, we won’t be eating at the restaurant at the Castle and Gardens as they can’t accommodate us. The meal, if we choose to go ahead, will be at the Blarney Castle Hotel, which is not connected to the gardens but is close by – Adam recommended it. They can offer us a soup and sandwich option with tea and coffee at €12.95, which is still steep for a sambo in my opinion, but it is close and would be convenient for the Gardens afterward – we don’t want to be trekking about or the day will be gone before we do the tour!

The other option is that we just meet for the tour and plant-swap and leave everyone to make their own arrangements to eat.

I have also heard back from John at Ratoath and they will be happy to facilitate us in September provided we don’t have lunch until 2pm as their restaurant gets very full at lunchtime. They will confirm the date in due course.

Blarney Gathering Update

Not so many flowers yet, despite Spring beginning to dawn.

Hopefully, if you cut and paste the link below, it will take you to My Drive where you can see the other flowers today

Hi Another test.

Hi Everyone, how are you all today?

Another fantastic day yesterday and it looks like it might be again today. Its great to get outside and do a bit and have the sun on your back too.

I only had about an hour again yesterday but I did a bit of tidying up…..mind you when you have 3 dogs running around chasing the birds its hard to keep them in check.

My daughters little dog, Ruby, seems to think that the plants are for her comfort not my enjoyment. So she decided to ‘sit’ yes SIT on the same plant no matter how many times I moved her. She was happy out just sitting there in the sun.
What a life!😁

I hope this dreaded cold snap thats forecast stays away….especially after having such fantastic weather it would be awful to go back to snow and ice again……hope the got it wrong! Just a couple of photos of some plants in bloom now!
Have a lovely day!

What a super day today was. When I was finished my errands this morning I donned the gardening gear and got out into the front armed with bags, and gloves. I’ve never seen so much Prunella (Self-heal) out the front, so that all got pulled up and bagged. Also, the wild garlic seems to have been totally evergreen this winter. My back is broken (well……almost) from removing so much of it today. Couldn’t get it all done in one day but I certainly made a dent in it. Now to keep it up. One of these days I’ll actually be free of it.

Did a bit more tidying up in the back too. Lots of discarded plastic pots were removed from the Lower pond. And I got some PROPER cultivated garlic planted into a large window box. Really enjoyed the couple of hours outdoors, it makes such a change from recent times.

Test message

I went for a walk yesterday and ended up in a nice garden centre in my neighbourhood (surprise, surprise) where they have well established planting displays.  The owner was away and two staff members were trying to identify some little bluish white bulbs which had come into flower.  They were thinking possibly Puschkinia.  I had a good look and thought they were Scilla mischtschenkoana, which I have in my garden.  I was chuffed when they looked it up and agreed!

The two do look very similar but the Scilla flowers are softer while Puschkinia are in more of a spike.  I find it hard to remember the Scilla’s long name (never mind pronounce it!), so I just call them my ice-blue scillas.

Mobile journal, Mon 19 Feb. Still can’t put a title in the box. Was in a garden centre the other day and noticed how garish most of the “primroses” seem this year. Ok for a window box or patio pot but wouldn’t fancy them in the garden.
