I have just found a biscuit tin of packets of Burpee Seeds from the US -- swiss chard seed tape, carnations, heliotrope, geraniums, lettuces, basil etc. -- about 30-35 packets dated from 1997! Is it worth my time to try to germinate them or shall I just dump them? It breaks my heart to do so but if it's a useless exercise, I won't bother. The tin was in the back of an upper shelf in a kitchen cupboard, completely forgotten about!
There is a strange grass that has invaded by garden. It has fibrous woody-like underground runners and is quite proliferous. The grass it produces is lovely but out of place among the established lavender and hydrangeas and it is impossible to pull. I have to dig down about 6 inches into the soil and under the plants to remove these runners. What is it? It is new this year - could it have come in with a hydrangea planted early autumn? Thanks very much.Desperate in Carrick!
1.5 metre high Orange tree in container (pit planted Jan. 1999) dropping leaves continuously with no apparent reason/visible damage. Leaves are pliable/healthy and smell of orange if rubbed but they are falling directly from the stem. Kept on enclosed, unheated porch year-round. Used an all-purpose pre-mixed liquid plant food for the first time in early May and the leaf drop started a week or so later. Flushed the container a few times since. Never had this problem before. Has never flowered but I don't mind. Could the roots be burned? Does it need repotting? Should I cut it back?
