Lichen on paths

Dorothy Jervis asked 15 years ago

Over the past couple of years I have noticed a brownish slippery substance on my ‘tar and chips’ yard and paths. this has increased 200% this year and is very obvious when the ground is wet. It seems to shrink when the ground dries. In time it turns to moss and looks terrible. I cant brush it off as this removes the chips. Is there any treatment you can suggest?

This is probably algae rather than lichen, which is normally dry and hard.

It can be associated with moss as both like damp ground conditions. In nature, this is found in bogland areas.

You can use any patio cleaner type product, such as Mosgo, or simply bleach, well diluted. Moss and algae will probably come back because the area is damp. Try to keep all leaves raked off the surface to reduce dampness.
