Artichoke in first year

andrea ryan asked 15 years ago

I planted a globe artichoke this year – bought plant , two artichokes have grown biggest about size of tennis ball, other golf ball; conflicting advise on whether 1. to allow to grow and eat or, 2. cut off as soon as it appears or 3.let grow and go to seed – am i too late for 2 if that is correct advise; i want a good crop next year. the plant has one new plant (shoot) beside it about 1 1/2 foot long, 2 leaves and one very small shoot. please advise

The usual advice is to take off the first season’s artichokes to increase vigour and cropping in subsequent years, which is fair enough, but not essential. Use or discard it, but don’t leave it on as it will reduce vigour.

Feed the plant with some fertilizer and mulch with compost or some such.
