First of all, it is by no means essential to grow vegetables in raised beds.

Raised beds only have value on heavy soils that are slow to dry out in spring. On the other hand, raised beds on normal soils, and especially on light soils, such as those in much of Co Louth, tend to dry out very quickly and then need a lot of watering, or crops are stunted and run to seed.

The best wood to use is scrap timber of any kind, but if you want to buy timber, the best is red deal, which is Douglas fir, naturally rot-resistant.
