camellia disease

meta tucker asked 13 years ago

My camellia Donation about 30 years old is covered in a soot like substance. It looks black even from a distance and this substance is now spreading to a nearby euonymus and pittospemum. I have other camellias nearby. Should I dig up the entire shrub?

The sooty mould grows on sugary honeydew excreted by scale insects feeding on the backs of the leaves. They are just a few millimetres long and pale green or yellowish.

You need to spray thoroughly with a systemic insecticide and repeat when you see them again.
