caterpillar prevention!

i’ve been given a recipe for prevention of caterpillers on crops -.garlic clove boiled in water diluted 10/1. can you tell me when i use this ? can it sprayed or watered on when plants have just been planted out?

Various remedies using garlic are put forward, and they may have some effect … by confusing the butterflies which are attracted to the smell of cabbage. But how effective they are is anybody’s guess.

It would seem likely that to use it when the butterflies are first seen and repeated when the scent fades away might have some effect.
