clematis

What is the rule of thumb for pruning clematis. I have a couple which are a few years old and are very straggely. I did prune them in early spring but maybe not hard enough?

There are 3 different regimes for pruing clematis depending on when they flower … spring, early summer or late summer.

In this case with an old plant that you want to rejuvenate, just cut it back as hard as you like, even to ground level, after flowering in spring, if it flowers then, or in late winter if it flowers in summer.
