We had limited success with clematis, last year was first year and it got a white fungus which inhibited growth. Any suggestions for this year to prevent a reoccurence?

This sounds like clematis mildew and the plant is probably growing in a dry spot close to a wall. Try mulching with compost and water heavily in any dry spell of more than a few days.
