I have a conifer growing in a feature which is getting too tall and blocking smaller shrubs in the feature, can I cut it down to size now?

Many conifers will not re-sprout if pruned back past the green foliage, otherwise they can be reduced in size at any time, but ideally spring.
It might be a better solution to remove it and it will outgrow its space again.
