Cutting hedge

David Peavoy asked 14 years ago

Last November I planted a mixed natural hedge of whitethorn, blacktorn, carpinus, hazel, guilder rose & spindle. Can you please advise what month is the best to cut back the whitethorn & what height should I cut it to. Also should I cut back the other varieties mentioned above at the same time.

If you intend growing it as a hedge, presumably you want it all at the same height and therefore all species would be clipped together, any time in autumn or winter.

It can be clipped to whatever height you want, allowing it to reach the height before clipping, although the side scan be clipped to keep it narrow before that.
