Dying escallonia

kathy doolin asked 16 years ago

Hi Gerry. I planted 180 escallonia in October of which 40 appear to be dead or dying. There is some new growth on a few of them but not much. The leaves basically go brown, harden then die. Any ideas on this,as I thought these were hardy plants. I’m in a very windy area, and the soil is not great quality.

Escallonia plants just planted in October have not settled in six months. It is always unwise to plant anything in a windy place before winter when plants will be battered.

Keep them free of weeds, plant up the gaps where they die, and feed with tree and shrub fertilizer or general fertilizer.
