Is it possible to eradicate nettles and thistles from an area of ground by just pulling them up and strimming them down so that grass will take over?

Nettles and thistles will not stand up to regular mowing and will die out over a period of time. You can start by cutting them down with a strimmer and then mow each week.
Otherwise you can cut them down and spray with lawn weedkiller when they re-sprout.
